It was nice bread, really nice bread.

… from the sweat! But [because] I crushed it up really good!

43 (a) ùbəvu səm gu izm’èsilə mlada bulka

I kneaded it up really good, young bride [that I was].

45 (a) izm’èsilə səm gu ùbəvu l’àbə

I kneaded that bread really well.

Vŭrbovo 2

1 (a) ìmašemo lòzje tùj gòre pa ga oràmo sɤz dèdo vàn’o

We had a vineyard up the hill here, and we plowed it with Grandpa Vanyo

3 (a) bèmo gòre kòpašemo li kvò li a nò se pòkaza oddòle

we were up there digging, or something, and from down below there appeared

4 (a) nèkvo nò ìmaše ukràse kvò li nè jà dùmaše

something, it had [some sort of] decoration. What sort of thing is this, I thought,

5 (a) tòj madžìe kàe nò bilò nišàn na parì imàlo

is this some sort of magic? But it turned out to be a sign of hidden money

6 (a) u tòj mèsto a nò si ìskopa sìne bàbo

in that place, and so he dug it out and – Ah, child, dear one,

49 (a) bòže no mòjə sìn je napràeno mu detìnstvo

Well, my God, it was done to my son when he was a little child.

50 (a) dojdè tùja a nò mu kosìcata tùj na tèmeto ostrìženo

He came up and [I saw] that his hair was shorn, here around the crown of his head.

51 (a) è tòlko parčènce ostrìženo mu ot kosùtu i ga izèdou

Here, just a part of his hair shorn away. They ( = magic forces) did him in,

52 (a) na drùgo devòjče tàj štò gi praìla šturotìe

and also the other girl. That one who was doing stupid things to them –

53 (b) na trìma e napràeno

[Spells] were cast on [all] three of them!

55 (b) na edìnijə za bòlest na edìnijə za pijànstvo

One was bewitched into illness, another into drunkenness,

56 (b) na drùgata za mrek’è

and the other one into dying.

9 (b) pòsle momčè̝tu pòčnə də sə učɨ u xisàrət

Then my son started to study in Hisar,

10 (b) trìjset kilugràmə rɤ̀š mi dudàdi n’àmə nè̝mə utkədè də gu zè̝mə

and they added thirty kilos of rye [to my duty]. I had nothing. No place to get it!

11 (b) às glànnə žɤ̀nnə əmə kvòtu ìmə nərèd ni dàvəə nə unìjə gudɨ̀nɨ

I was hungry and thirsty, but in those years they required us to give as duty.

12 (b) kvò də nəpràvə tə mi skɤ̀səa mumčè̝tu skɤ̀səa mi mumčè̝tu

What could I do? They failed my boy, they failed my boy

13 (b) ut xisàrə se uč’èše i skɤ̀səhə i idnɤ̀ gudɨ̀nə pò nədòlu

that was studying in Hisar, they failed him and set him back an entire year

14 (b) məkàr.če se ùčeše̥ mnògu i skɤ̀səә̀ če ne sɤ̀m dàlə

even though he was studying hard – they failed him [simply] because I didn’t give them

15 (b) trìjse kilugràmə rɤ̀š vɨ̀š kəkvɨ̀ bèə unèə unèə gudɨ̀nɨ

thirty kilos of rye. You see what they were like in those years!
