We had a vineyard up the hill here, and we plowed it with Grandpa Vanyo

we were up there digging, or something, and from down below there appeared
4 (a) nèkvo nò ìmaše ukràse kvò li nè jà dùmaše
something, it had [some sort of] decoration. What sort of thing is this, I thought,
5 (a) tòj madžìe kàe nò bilò nišàn na parì imàlo
is this some sort of magic? But it turned out to be a sign of hidden money
6 (a) u tòj mèsto a nò si ìskopa sìne bàbo
in that place, and so he dug it out and – Ah, child, dear one,
49 (a) bòže no mòjə sìn je napràeno mu detìnstvo
Well, my God, it was done to my son when he was a little child.
50 (a) dojdè tùja a nò mu kosìcata tùj na tèmeto ostrìženo
He came up and [I saw] that his hair was shorn, here around the crown of his head.

Here, just a part of his hair shorn away. They ( = magic forces) did him in,
52 (a) na drùgo devòjče tàj štò gi praìla šturotìe
and also the other girl. That one who was doing stupid things to them –

[Spells] were cast on [all] three of them!
55 (b) na edìnijə za bòlest na edìnijə za pijànstvo
One was bewitched into illness, another into drunkenness,

and the other one into dying.

Then my son started to study in Hisar,

and they added thirty kilos of rye [to my duty]. I had nothing. No place to get it!
11 (b) às glànnə žɤ̀nnə əmə kvòtu ìmə nərèd ni dàvəə nə unìjə gudɨ̀nɨ
I was hungry and thirsty, but in those years they required us to give as duty.
12 (b) kvò də nəpràvə tə mi skɤ̀səa mumčè̝tu skɤ̀səa mi mumčè̝tu
What could I do? They failed my boy, they failed my boy
13 (b) ut xisàrə se uč’èše i skɤ̀səhə i idnɤ̀ gudɨ̀nə pò nədòlu
that was studying in Hisar, they failed him and set him back an entire year
14 (b) məkàr.če se ùčeše̥ mnògu i skɤ̀səә̀ če ne sɤ̀m dàlə
even though he was studying hard – they failed him [simply] because I didn’t give them

thirty kilos of rye. You see what they were like in those years!
