What do you grow in the garden?

Tomatoes, peppers, this [and that].

4 (a) a ìmaše tàm kɤdè pòmpenata stàncija ìmaxme gradìni i tàm s rasàžda:me sìčki

There was – we had gardens by the pump station, transplanted everything there.

5 (a) mòjto pa tvòjto pa na narèt po dvèsta mètra tàm

Mine, then yours, two hundred meters’ [long], all in a row –

6 (a) kòlko po màlko i tàm sàde:me pipèra tàm polìva:me

maybe a bit less – and we planted peppers there, and irrigated them.

7 (a) tùka sàmo kartofi sàdexme a pòsle oddòle onàa gradìna

[but] here we only planted potatoes. Then there was that garden below

vineyards along the hillside. It’s flat below, so [that’s where] I grow tomatoes,

then fertilize them and then dig again, and that’s it.

What I didn’t manage! I chopped beans to make preserves –

And tomatoes, and peppers – And the corn came in fine. Everything!

A garden this big – well, it was like a cow to us.
